Vital Everton Summer Interview: Yak
1. Who are ya?? What is your username on Vital Everton?
I'm Yak and I am the main editor of Vital Everton.
(I feel like I'm kind of talking to myself writing this!)
2. How did you become an Everton fan?
I'm not entirely sure, it was just something I always did from before I can remember. I guess there must have been some parental guidance in there somewhere!
3. What is your all time best moment as an Everton fan?
Being given the chance to build Vital Everton was a proud moment! The site had been around for a while and some great people had given it a go, so when I was contacted to take over I have to admit I was rather chuffed.
On the pitch, my best moment was the FA Cup win in 95. I have memories of the great 80's teams but was too young and took it for granted.
4. Who is your all time favourite Everton player?
Obviously there are much more fashionable choices out there, but for me it's Dave Watson.
5. The season just gone, good bad or ugly? What did you think of it?
As it involved taking over and running Vital Everton, I have quite fond memories of it.
Obviously it was a season of two halves. The first half was ugly, but as it was down to injuries it never felt too desperate.
I remember writing one article based on the quotes from one of our players (can not remember who) talking about being in a relegation scrap around November time. But while the table might have suggested that, it never felt like a reality to me.
The second half was then superb, excellent results against the so called big clubs and a quite brilliant run of form.
To end up feeling disappointed that we didn't make Europe from where we were mid season was unbelievable.
6. Best and worst moment of last season?
Worst moment of last season was failing to beat Wolves. It pretty much ended all hopes of qualifying for Europe.
Best moment, knocking over Manchester United convincingly.
7. What is needed to improve for next season?
Like most seasons, we need to turn a few draws into wins. Just three or four wins instead of draws would make a massive difference to the league table.
8. What do you think of the signings so far?
I would have liked to have been able to spend some money and give David Moyes a real chance of getting us back in the Champions League. The squad is there, it's just lacking a bit of depth.
Having said that though, all the newbies do bring depth to the side.
Mucha had a good World Cup and looks like he could push Tim Howard.
Silva, if the reports are true, we could have a great player on our hands in a few years time.
Gueye, I thought would be another one signed with the future in mind, but he may have played himself into contention following good reports in the friendlies.
While Beckford could prove to be the signing of the season in the Premier League.
26-years-old with pace and an eye for goal on a free transfer. There will be some doubts on him as he hasn't got Premier League experience, but he looks pretty low risk to me and could prove to be that extra bit up front that we've been missing when Yak and Saha lose form.
9. Expectations for next season, back in Europe?
Odds on I think! This could be one of the most open Premier League's for a while. We're one of eight clubs who have a realistic shot at Europe and our end of season form suggests that we could even sneak a Champions League spot.
10. If you had to choose, Champions League qualification or FA Cup win?
Being a traditionalist, the obvious answer is the FA Cup.
I understand that financially fourth in the Premier League is now seen as a better achievement. But for me, the league title itself is the only thing better than lifting the FA Cup.
