After securing his first win as Everton manager, Martinez will be hoping he can make it back to back wins as Everton travel to Upton Park to take on West Ham on Saturday. Just shows how much can change in a week in football, after 3 disappointing draws, there was a little cloud of negativity beginning to form over Goodison, however, after the win last weekend, and with the new signings, there is suddenly some optimism about the side for the rest of the season. West Ham has enjoyed a solid start to the season, with the side being light on striking options, West Ham have had to rely on a strong defence and goalkeeper, and that was clearly evident on their last performance, a 0-0 draw against Southampton. This game could be a very tight affair as combined, both sides have only conceded 3 goals this season, however Everton will be hoping the fact that they can now rely on Lukaku can help in the attacking third.
Everton deadline day signing Romelu Lukaku thoughts on his new side
"The coaches base the training sessions on technique and the position of the team, and I felt that was an area where I really needed to improve, That`s why I came here, because it`s a team that is dominating a lot and Roberto Martinez is a coach who likes possession of the ball.
"I think he`s a manager at this stage in my career who can help me.
"Personally, I just want to help the team finish as high as possible in the league and hopefully arrive in a cup final if possible.
'I`m a striker, so if I keep it simple and score goals, that will be important. I`ll work hard and if I do my best in training everyday then goals will come."
West Ham manager Sam Allardyce will be looking on with envy as Everton showcase summer signing Lukaku after Big Sam revealed he was chasing Lukaku this summer saying
'I chased him all summer to be honest. But when it became the final day of the deadline we missed out an Everton managed to
secure his position. We were more or less told he was going back to West Brom. We tried, but didn't manage to clinch it.'
The major problem for Big Sam and West Ham is the lack of striking options they have, entering the season they were light on options, but that was compounded with the serious injury to star signing Andy Carroll, however, it was revealed this week that the 15mil signing will not require surgery. West Ham have signed Carlton Cole and Mladen Petric as Big Sam attempts to alleviate the clubs striker problems, however, both are considered a couple weeks from being match fit. Other than that, Big Sam should have a full squad to choose from.
Possible Starting XI: Jaaskelainen, Demel, Reid, Collins, O'Brien, Diame, Noble, Jarvis, Nolan, Morrison, Maiga
With West Ham short on striking options, they will have to rely on goals from the midfield, and the hard running Senegalese midfielder can provide that for West Ham. Not only will he have to pose a threat going froward, but with Everton most likely dominating the possession, he is going to have to put in a shift defensively in order to stifle the Everton attack. If Diame and Noble can dominate the midfield, it could go a long way in West Ham getting a result.
The big news for Everton is that summer signing is now eligible to make his debut for his club after he was ineligible last week to face his parent club. However, Martinez now has a bit of a selection dilemma upfront with Jelavic, Kone and Lukaku all vying for the one available spot. Everton welcome back Darron Gibson after he recovered from his knee injury that has sidelined him to start the season, however he isn't expected to start. Everton are also set to welcome back Arouna Kone after the missed the Chelsea match with a bruised knee. Antolin Alcaraz is still missing for Everton as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. The only other injury doubt is Steven Pienaar, Martinez said Pienaar is 50-50 for the match, however, with the 3 games in a week, isn't expected to be risked.
Possible Starting XI: Howard, Coleman, Jagielka, Distin, Baines, Barry, McCarthy, Mirallas, Naismith, Barkley, Lukaku
Martinez has kept his cards close to his chest regarding who will be the starting striker against West Ham, but the majority of Everton fans will be hoping that the Chelsea loanee Romelu Lukaku will be the man. Everton have struggled to convert chances this season, and Everton fans will be hoping that Lukaku can have a similar effect as he had at West Brom last season scoring 17 goals last season. The big Belgian seems to be the complete centre forward, his combination of power, strength, pace and eye for goal, could potentially make him a world class striker and Everton fans will be hoping to see that potential on the weekend.
1. Everton youngster Ross Barkley has recorded 19 successful dribbles past opponents this season, that is the most in the Premier League and makes him 2nd in the 5 major European leagues (behind Franck Ribery)
2. Despite the formidable home form, Everton have been atrocious away from Goodison, their last away win was on the 1st of January, 2013, as they beat Newcastle 2-1
3. Everton have kept 3 clean sheets in the last 3 games, West Ham have also been good defensively only conceding 1 goal this season
4. Everton have owned West Ham in the past few years, Everton have not lost to West Ham in the last 10 games, with 6 wins and 4 draws
5. Everton have attempted 681 passes in the final third and completed 517 of those. The most in the league, and 6th throughout Europe.
Last weekends win was huge for Martinez and Everton, it gave the whole club some confidence that what Martinez is doing is the right way to go about it and has really provided some optimism for the rest of the season. Not to mention, Martinez now has the luxury of relying on a world class striker in the form of Lukaku, and hopefully Everton fans will see their first glimpse of him at Upton Park. West Ham this season have posed little threat on goal, and with the defence of Everton looking solid, I find it difficult to see how West Ham can penetrate and score against this Everton side. It will be a case of Everton trying to break this tight West Ham defence down, and I am hoping the fact we have Lukaku, we can take at least 1 chance and get the win. For my prediction, going with a 2-0 Everton win with Lukaku and Barkley scoring for Everton. COYB!!!!!!! COME ON LADS
