Winning By Any Means

Winning By Any Means

Ok, we wouldn't want Everton to literally win 'by any means', well I wouldn't, but I'd fully agree with Gylfi Sigurdsson that we need, quite simply, start winning be that 'pretty or ugly' as a wins a win.

Attention momentarily shifts away from the Premier League - where we've only won twice in eight games to languish in 16th and just two points above the bottom three - toward the Europa League.

However, this competition hasn't seen the Blues do any better as we're bottom of Group E having lost to Atalanta and drawn, disappointingly, against the 10 men of Apollon Limassol at Goodison Park last time round.

Sigurdsson, who made a stunning start to his Everton career but, like most of his teammates, has found the going tough since, is aware of the importance of Thursday's Europa League meeting with Lyon and hopes this can start a winning run, which the midfielder doesn't feel the Blues are 'too far away' from achieving.

"Obviously the next game is an important one but, for us at the moment, we just need to win, pretty or ugly,' he told the Official Website.

Adding: 'We just need to get results and once we do that, the confidence will come back into the team and things will come a little bit easier for us. And I think if we get a couple of results back-to-back then we'll hopefully get going. I don't think we're too far away.'

The Icelandic international is still confident of our European chances though in a group where 'everyone can beat anyone.'

He said: 'It's a strange group. I think everyone can beat anyone. There's a few good teams in there. You may need at least 10 points to go through and it will be nice to start [building towards] that on Thursday against a tough team.'

The margins are fine between success and failure and, similarly to what Phil Jagielka had said, Sigurdsson is hopeful we can get a little bit of luck to help turn fortunes around and build confidence - there's certainly enough 'good players' to do so.

'The boys and the staff are determined to work hard to turn this around because we've got good players. Personally and with all of the players collectively, we're just off our best. But they are small margins in football and I don't think we're a mile off getting results, and a couple of scruffy wins, 1-0 away or whatever it is, that pumps a little bit of confidence into the team and that's sometimes what you need.'
