Tottenham Lead Chelsea In Barkley Battle?
Ross Barkley was expected to leave Everton in January but a deadline day to Chelsea failed to take place, for whatever reason.
It doesn't really matter why this deal didn't take place, the simple facts are it didn't.
However, Chelsea are reportedly ready to return for Barkley when the January transfer window reopens but they'll again have competition from Tottenham - now seen as favourites to sign him.
According to the Telegraph, Barkley, who is currently recovering from an injury that's sidelined him for the duration of the season to date - but full fitness will be reached by the end of the year, would fetch the Blues £20m.
Chelsea had seen a £35m bid accepted in August but failure for this deal to go through means the Blues will have to accept a lower amount or risk losing Barkley, 23, on a free in the summer.
These reports feel Tottenham now have the edge over the champions as Mauricio Pochettino could add him to Spurs' England contingency, which is also seen as a positive for the national side and Gareth Southgate would hope his true potential can be recognised in London in time for him to make an impact at the 2018 World Cup finals.
Much like it not making any difference as to why Barkley didn't leave Goodison Park in the summer it makes little odds as to where he goes - wherever this is we'll just have to hope it doesn't come back to haunt us...
