Underdogs tag does not bother Everton

Everton go into the game against Arsenal at Goodison Park as the underdogs with the British bookmakers.

Perhaps Everton's winless pre-season coupled with our inability to beat Championship winners Leicester City has played a part in their thinking.

Or Arsenal's summer signings have made Arsene Wenger's team a more attractive proposition.

Either way despite our 3-0 victory back in April it is Arsenal that are as short as 6/4 to take the points, whilst Everton are 9/5 with the draw at 5/2.

But Everton manager Roberto Martinez is not surprised that Arsenal are the favourites, with the Spaniard wanting his side to prove that they are real contenders for the top four this season.

"It doesn`t surprise me (Underdogs tag) because they are a team that got into the Champions League positions and have been doing it for many years. We`ve got to earn that respect. Martinez told Echo

He continued: "I don`t think just one season when we did well in two games against them can give you an outcome in that respect."

"What we have in our favour is that we are still hurt after dropping two points at the weekend, I like that. It shows our standards and that we don`t accept second best.

"What we want is to look at the game against Arsenal as an opportunity to be as good as we can be. Arsenal have signed well in the summer. They`ve brought in players who fit into their style of playing very well and I don`t think it`s a big surprise to have them considered as one of the biggest forces not just in English football but on a European front.
