McCarthy excited about competition for places

After just one season at Everton, James McCarthy has been linked with a 25million move to either Manchester United or Tottenham.

But the speculation has not affected the 23-year-old, who has shown that pressure from a 13million price tag also didn't bother him.

Everton shelled out 13million in a deal that many Evertonians wondering if it had been a bit of a gamble.

But whilst it was big money, it was yet another gamble that Martinez pulled off as McCarthy enjoyed an excellent debut season at Everton.

He made 39 appearances for Everton during his first season and the Republic Of Ireland midfielder is looking forward to making many more.

"I`m enjoying life here. I feel part of the family. It`s a real family club and it`s great to be involved in. It`s been a year since I came but it feels a lot longer than that." McCarthy told The Echo.

It's been a positive summer for Everton, with Ross Barkley signing a new long-term contract and the permanent signings of Romelu Lukaku and Gareth Barry, as well as the new signing of Muhamed Besic.

He continued: "Me and Gaz (Gareth Barry) loved playing in the middle of the park last season. He was brilliant to work with and I`m excited he`s stayed. He`s an experienced head and talks away to you both on and off the pitch.

"There`s competition there now. We`ve got Gibbo (Darren Gibson) coming back (from injury) and the new boy Muhamed (Besic) looks like a good player.

"We`ll need that competition with the new season coming and so many games. We`ll all have to be on our toes with so many talented boys ready to come in and do a job.
