The chase is on for Champions League football next season. Arsenal, Everton, Tottenham and Manchester United are still all in striking distance of fourth place.
It's the target that all teams are in the Premier League are aiming for, the Premier League may well be the best domestic league in the world, but the UEFA Champions League is the pinnacle of European football and with that comes the financial rewards, especially once the new BT Sport contract comes into play.
However for Everton, any European football will prove to be a step forward and as we progress under Roberto Martinez, the UEFA Europa League will be a big step forward.
It does bring its problems of course, our squad for instance would be far too small to compete on two fronts. The strain of Thursday-Sunday games with all the travel in between would be difficult. But it is something a club like Everton should be chasing.
"What's important is that as a football club we are ready, in every department, and to be tested and push ourselves in Europe. Martinez told The Echo.
He continued: "We are so fortunate to have a group of players we have. We need to take all the good work from this campaign into the next campaign and the only way we can do that is by qualifying for European competition.
"It is not going to be easy because we are in the same boat as Spurs, Manchester United even Southampton, Newcastle as well as the top four in the league.
"So it is not an easy ask but we don't want it to be easy."
