Do Everton want Europa League football?

Everton look on course to qualify for European competition next season.

Whilst we flirted with the possibility of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League was always likely to be more of a realistic target.

The pull of European football is important to players, if we are competing in European competitions we are a more attractive target to potential new signings.

Despite the old UEFA Cup being severely diminished by the expansion of the Champions League, there is still something special about European nights on the continent.

However the schedule is harsh on teams. Thursday - Sunday matches takes its toll on the players, whilst clubs really need larger squads to compete despite the competition lacking the financial rewards.

"It`s mixed feelings because you can`t say no to playing in Europe. As a player it`s impossible to not want that.

"But it`s completely different from the Champions League in terms of finances for the club. It`s a lot of travel and you need a big squad.
Sylvain Distin told The Echo.

He continued: "Yes it would be amazing for the club and for the fans to be travelling back in Europe again.

"But for the team, if we`re not going to have a much bigger squad next season, it could be tough.

"If you look at the big picture, as I say it`s important you`ve got to ensure that being in the Europa League doesn`t make you suffer back in the league.

Premier League form has to take priority of the Europa League and so if we are rotating players in Europe, then the games lose their sparkle.

It does make you wonder if it's worth it?
