Martinez backs Stones for England
Everton gaffer Roberto Martinez has backed Everton youngster John Stones to make the grade at International level for England.
Following on from Derek Houlton's article looking at the young talent coming through at Goodison Park, John Stones is very much one of those stars.
At still just 19-years-old, Stones was thrown in to the mix against West Ham United, making just his fifth Premier League start.
For an hour of that match he came up against West Ham and England striker Andy Carroll. A player that Liverpool valued at £35 million just three years ago.
"I think that was as good a test as John is going to get,"
"Making your debut as a centre-half at the Britannia Stadium is going to test you, but when you have to play against Andy Carroll it`s not good enough just to be strong and physical and cope with 50-50 balls, it`s understanding when and when not to challenge, having a good relationship with your partner - and he was magnificent. Martinez told the The Post.
It was only Stones 11th Premier League appearance since making the move to Everton from Barnsley. But Martinez believes he is already showing the character that should see him break through from the England Under-21 set-up to the first team.
He continued: "He showed that we have a future England international at senior level and someone with an immense, immense career."
Stones has made seven appearances for England Under-21 since making his debut in June 2013.
