'If It's Football, It's Vital'

So how good is this Everton side?

Evertonian and optimism isn't usually two words that you would associate with each other, certainly in recent times.

But this season there is something different around Goodison Park.

A reinvigorated David Moyes, with a fresh attacking approach.

Exciting new players in Everton shirts, all looking impressive.

From Pienaar to Oviedo, from the youngsters Kennedy and (hopefully) Odjidja-Ofoe to Mirallas and Naismith the new look Everton squad has potential throughout.

Sylvain Distin has already asked the question whether this is the best side since he's been at the club.

But just how far can this side go?

'the manager made a conscious point of stating to the players, that he wanted us to start well.' Naismith told the Post.

He continued: "We showed, especially in the Manchester United game, we were willing to fight and got our just rewards with a good 1-0 win and we pushed on from there in the cup game and against Aston Villa, although obviously last weekend wasn`t a great result to finish it off.

"The squad believe we can go into every game and compete and win. You want to finish as high as you can, that goes without saying, but it`s too early to say where you`re going to finish.

With the international break coming up this evening, we thought we would keep that discussion going.

So just how much can Evertonians hope for this season?

Rob-EFC said: In the last 3yrs it is most definitely the best squad we have had, in terms of both quality and depth. Is it the strongest under Moyes? That is a tougher question because the team around 2007-09 before Lescott was sold was very good, so much so, I thought we could've finished 4th.

With this squad, it will need some luck to finish 4th, but from the early signs from us, and more importantly the contenders for 4th, I think 4th isn't totally out of the question for this squad. For me, this team needs to achieve European footy for next season, be it Champs League or more realistically Europa.

evertonmandan added: In my way of seeing things, this is the 3rd best team i have seen as an Evertonian full stop! ( 1959) onwards!!!!

While Yak added: This side has a great deal of potential and although my years do not go as far back as evertonmandan, I'll agree with the other two posters that this side does look good.

But it does need to achieve something be it a top six finish or winning some silverware.

The simple fact is since Kendalls football wonders of the 80s we have struggled to express ourselves as a football side capable of providing eye candy entertainment .........until NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND WOW!!!!!!!! If we don't finish near the top of the table it will be because of injuries but cross fingers this wont happen. Moyes though, has got to come to his senses and realize how good we bloody well are and stop being so defensive!
