'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Best Everton side in recent years?

Are we witnessing the best Everton side over the past three years?

Sylvain Distin certainly thinks this squad has the potential to be the best Everton side since he came to Goodison Park in 2009 following a £5million move from Portsmouth.

The 34-year-old believes that with the more recent additions of the likes of Kevin Mirallas, Steven Naismith, Steven Pienaar, Bryan Oviedo, Matthew Kennedy and potentially Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe (if his signing is rubber stamped by FIFA later today), then the competition amongst the squad could really push the team in the right direction.

"That is what we want, We want our team to get better and for there to be more competition between the players.' Distin told the Echo.

He continued: "When you see new players coming in you know everything is moving in the right direction. It`s a bit early to say this is the best squad during my time here, but I rarely remember the squad having so much quality."

So how would we judge if this is the best time during the Distin era?

Distin joined in August 2009, that season we finished eighth with 61 points. The following year we finished seventh with 54 points and last season we again finished seventh with 56 points.

In the Cups the furthest we've got was the semi-final of last seasons FA Cup.

So what should the target be this season? A top six finish? A Cup Final? Some silverware?

In the last 3yrs it is most definitely the best squad we have had, in terms of both quality and depth. Is it the strongest under Moyes? That is a tougher question because the team around 2007-09 before Lescott was sold was very good, so much so, I thought we could've finished 4th. With this squad, it will need some luck to finish 4th, but from the early signs from us, and more importantly the contenders for 4th, I think 4th isn't totally out of the question for this squad. For me, this team needs to achieve European footy for next season, be it Champs League or more realistically Europa.
