Donovan eyes break

Anyone hoping to see Landon Donovan return to Everton this winter are likely to be disappointed.

The American captain and Los Angeles Galaxy skipper had been heavily linked with a third spell at Everton in January, but it would seem the 30-year-old is in desperate need of a break to re-charge his batteries.

In fact some have wondered if he had actually begun hinting at an early retirement from the game after an intense schedule has seen him play in America's Major League Soccer, the USA squad and Everton in the Premier League over the past 20 months.

"The chances of me playing again this off-season are very slim, I`ve had, not since this January but last January [2011], a total of two weeks off. My soccer enthusiasm is not as high as it was two years ago. I`m kind of ready for a break when this [MLS] season is over." he told the Soccer Today radio podcast.

It would seem that the past few months have taken its toll on Donovan. It was only a few months ago that he sounded keen on a return, although even back in May he was beginning to question if physically he would be up to a return.

I've always said the same thing: I'll see how my body feels, I'll see how I feel mentally, I'll see where the Galaxy are at and what they're okay or not okay with and then we'll make a decision. he told FIFA's website in May..it would seem that decision has now been made and it isn't the answer many Evertonians would have hoped for.

Makes sense, been playing non-stop football for a good 2yrs now. Still think he will end up in the blue shirt of Everton when his contract expires next year.
