'If It's Football, It's Vital'

A little bit of history at Goodison Park

At little bit of history was made at Goodison Park last night against AEK Athens.

Tony Hibbert might have said tongue firmly placed in cheek, that he wanted to score his first goal from 30 yards, but on his testimonial he fired one home from 22 yards!

At 31-years of age, 10 years and 300 games have passed at Everton without a career goal, Evertonians have said for years that 'When Hibbo Scores We Riot' and last night they did, well a mini pitch invasion to be exact, which is far more civilised than a riot.

The goal came from a free-kick on the angle of the box after Hibbo was given the nod by Leighton Baines to have a pop at goal.

"It was special - I`d like to thanks the fans so much. I said to Bainesy if we get a free-kick in that sort of area I`d take it, but then Ossie said to me that the manager was emphasising it was a proper game not just a testimonial.' Hibbo told the Echo after the match.

He continued: 'He wanted a good workout and a good standard of football. He`d told Bainsey not to let me take penalties.

"But when we won the free kick I looked at Bainsey and nodded and he nodded back so I went over. It`s done now and everyone saw what happened.

"The fans had come here to see me have a go; they wanted to see me score. I just wanted to show them I`d try to go for it and it just came to me."

Oh and we won 4-1 with Steven Naismith scoring a 30 minute hat-trick, not that anyone really cares about that today!

Great scenes, I wonder if the AEK players had any idea what was going on???
