Cahill to leave Everton for the USA

It had looked inevitable for a while but late last night Everton confirmed that Tim Cahill would be leaving Goodison.

The news was released to hit the United States of America during prime-time with the Australian international joining one of the biggest clubs in Major League Soccer, the New York Red Bulls.

While the official Everton website says that the deal is for a nominal fee, other reports have suggested that the 32-year-old will move to the MLS once he has completed his medical and agreed personal terms in a £1million deal.

Cahill leaves Everton after eight fantastic years. He made 278 appearances for the club scoring 68 goals, he always gave his all, but last year appeared to be a season to far.

In 2010 Cahill scored 18 goals for Australia and Everton, but 2011 was fruitless, he did find his scoring boots again during the final part of last season adding 3 goals to his tally, but the days of Cahill being one of the best in the Premier League had gone.

It was still a surprise to see him linked with the likes of Al Ittihad and Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia and reading about him actually holding talks with Chinese Super League club Guizhou Renhe was quite bizarre, but this move to New York seems a much better option for Cahill.

He might not be amongst the elite in the Premier League any more but he isn't quite at that point where he takes up semi-retirement playing in some of the poorest (quality wise, not monetary wise!) leagues in the world.

Good luck to Cahill you will be missed in Merseyside.

Sad day for the club, players like Cahill are a rarity in football these days, the type of player that would literally bleed for the club, gave 100% in every game he played and wore his heart on his sleeve, and on his day (granted 1 or 2yrs ago) he was, I would say struck fear into defenders because he would harass defenders non-stop and of course given a chance on his head would bury it. Good luck Timmy, cheers for the memories lad, a true modern day Everton legend in my books.

Well said Rob-EFC. I am a Villa fan but I am also Australian and Cahill is my favourite player in an Australian shirt as like Rob said gives his all on the pitch. I'm sorry to see him leave Everton as I like to see him and your club do well (I have a bit of a soft spot for EFC). So I wish Timmy luck and I also wish Everton luck for the new season. Cheers.

His legacy will live on! and i hope a lot of the youngsters at the club will emulate his spirit. His timing in leaving us is spot on to tell the truth, he gave his all for the cause and i'm sure he will be back one day as a coach or even as a manager!
