Everton target Pranjić signs for Sporting

Everton had reportedly been set to complete the signing of Danijel Pranjić earlier this month.

The 31-year-old Croatian who was a free agent after being released from his contract with Bayern Munich was said to be keen on a move to Everton and had expected a deal to be concluded pretty swiftly ahead of pre-season.

However it was always likely that Pranjić was being lined up as an option to fill a gap that Moyes may have to fill in the future.

With Pranjić being pretty versatile and able to play in midfield or as he has done for Croatia at left wing-back or left-back, he would have given David Moyes options if he failed to complete the signing of Steven Pienaar from Tottenham, or perhaps as a makeshift replacement for Leighton Baines if the rumours linking him to Manchester United became a reality.

But with Everton and Spurs said to still be locked into talks and no concrete moves on Manchester United's part for Leighton Baines, the need to complete the signing of Danijel Pranjić was less pressing.

With the Croatian frustrated at the speed of the move being completed, the Croatian decided to look elsewhere and he has now signed a three-year-deal with Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon.

'David Moyes publicly announced that he wanted me at Everton,' Pranjic told Sportske Novosti.

He added: 'But then I got a feeling that things were moving too slow and I didn't want to wait anymore.

'I could have waited until the end of August but then Sporting knocked on my door and I knew right away that this is what I want.

From what I have heard he was only a back up if the Pienaar deal fell through, but since the Pienaar transfer is almost complete, Moyes decided not to pursue Pranjic. Shame though, he can cover a lot of positions, and we need a bit of depth.

Kenwright is notoriously slow at getting things done so we lost out. We might lose out on Pienaar too if he doesn't get his act together, apparently he was playing in a Spurs friendly against Stevenage !!! dont know what to make of that!!!!!!!!!!

I dont understand why people are angry at him playing a preseason match, he needs to get his fitness base back as well ahead of the new season, so a runout didn't harm him in anyway. The deal will get done, people need to be patient.

In my opinion we let a good one go in Pranjic but hey ho---- on a positive note, the weather is good again and along with that we are making progress-Pienarr very soon! Rodwell and Barclay making giant strides and Naismith looking pretty damn good!
