Naismith did not have a medical over the weekend

Well one week down the line and as we predicted on Vital Everton, Rangers striker Steven Naismith is indeed one to keep an eye on.

Even before the 25-year-old Scottish forward had declared himself as free agent, after he had refused the transfer of his contract to the Rangers newco, Naismith was already a rumoured target for David Moyes.

The idea of linking up Steven Naismith and Nikica Jelavić at Goodison Park was always one to ignite a lot of interest.

Naismith boasts a record of 63 goals in 140 appearances for Rangers since he joined the Scottish Premier League side from Kilmarnock in 2007 and Everton's Jelavić has previously described Naismith as the best strike partner he has ever had.

It had been previously reported that following Rangers financial difficulties, the Scotland international had a release clause of £2million written into his contract after he took a 75% pay-cut in February.

But events over the past few weeks now mean he could be available on a free transfer, although it could still prove to be a legal minefield to complete the deal.

Reports over the weekend suggested that a deal could be imminent with Naismith apparently completing a medical over the weekend, but that has now been denied by Everton.

While a deal is not done yet, everything appears to be pointing in the direction that it will be done sooner rather than later.
