McFadden to train with Motherwell

James McFadden will join up with Scottish Premier League side Motherwell for pre-season training.

The 29-year-old is currently without a club after being released by Everton at the end of last season and Motherwell have confirmed he will be linking up with them shortly.

It could be the first indication of a U-turn by McFadden who had previously given Aberdeen boss Craig Brown the impression that he wasn't interested in a return to Scotland and wanted to remain in England.

When we covered Aberdeen's interest in him back in May I have to confess I found it all a bit arrogant from McFadden.

This was a player who had made just two Premier League starts during the season with Everton and an additional five appearances from the bench.

Which worked out at 166 minutes of playing time or 231 minutes if you also count the FA Cup appearance against Tamworth.

Now considering he hadn't kicked a ball in anger for over a year when we signed him in October 2011 after his injuries to completely discount clubs who were interested in him I thought would be a mistake and so it appears to have proved.

That said Stv believe that Motherwell may offer the player a short-term deal but the chances of the club offering a longer contract are currently remote.

He didn't want to go to Aberdeen, can't say i blame him, at least with Motherwell he's close to his roots. As regards it being a short contract with Motherwell-well thats to be expected-so its upto him to get stuck in to some solid training shed some fat and prove himself on the pitch. His decline over the years is a shame because at one time he was called the most promising player in scottish football.
