Gordon West dies

Everton have announced the sad news that Former Everton goalkeeper Gordon West has died at the age of 69.

His partner Linda and his sons Stephen and Mark were at his bedside when he passed away peacefully in his sleep after a battle with cancer.

"It`s terribly sad. As far as I could tell he was never the same since Brian Labone died. They were such good buddies, they really were. Everton chaplain Reverend Harry Ross said to the Echo.

He continued: "Talk to their team-mates from that era and they say the pair of them had a special rapport. They ensured the atmosphere in the dressing room was utterly fantastic.

"He was a legend. Bill Kenwright called him one of the great players in Everton history and a wonderful advertisement for football.

"I cannot pay him a higher compliment than that.

West joined Everton from Blackpool in 1962 for a then British record fee for a goalkeeper; £27,000.

He made 402 appearances for the club, winning two league titles in 1963 and 1970 and also lifting the FA Cup in 1966.

He also won three caps for England.

Former Everton team-mate Howard Kendall added: "It`s so very, very sad. He was a great goalkeeper and a lovely man and it`s another one we`ve lost from that great team we all played in.

"A few of the lads, Joe Royle, Derek Temple and one or two others had planned to meet him for lunch, until we heard just how ill he was. Now we`ll never have that time together."

Vital Everton would like to pass on our best wishes to all Gordon West's family and friends.

Very sad. I remember him being the goalie for Everton when I started supporting Spurs in the early 60s. R.I.P. Gordon. Many condolences to your family.

Wasn't alive to witness him play, but from what I have heard of him, was a brilliant keeper in the 60's, but more importantly was a top top man off the pitch. R.I.P Gordon and thoughts are with his family.
