Baines hoping to stake England claim

Saturday evening's friendly in Oslo against Norway is likely to be Leighton Baines' best shot at impressing for England before Euro 2012.

Ashley Cole recently starred in Chelsea's UEFA Champions League Final victory, so England boss Roy Hodgson could well rest Cole for this one and give Baines a chance to hopefully impress and stake his claim.

"Ashley had the Champions League final...so hopefully I'll feature in at least the first one (friendly)," Baines told evertontv.

He added: "It's just an opportunity to get a game and stake a claim.

"It`s about getting that good preparation out of the next couple of weeks, a couple of friendlies, some good training and whatever is necessary.

"After that we`ll be fully-focused, hopefully have a fully-fit squad and we`ll be well prepared going into the competition."

Unfortunately for Leighton Baines that probably means that Ashley Cole will get the nod as one of the best left backs in world at the current time.

But if Cole picks up an injury, hopefully Baines will be prepared to step up and take the slack.

Kick off is 7.45pm on ITV1 for viewers in the UK.

Hi Champion Willy ..has this boy ever won a medal anywhere? Lescott would have been the same ... I bet he thanks his lucky stars that City came in for him...now has FA cup and Premiership medals. Mind you he wouldn't have got the latter without your wonderful four all at th Scumodrome. Yep we all have a soft spot for the Toffeemen ... Medals or no medals.
