Howard surpasses Neville record

On Saturday Everton Keeper Tim Howard surpassed Neville Southall for number of appearances in goal for Everton during the Premier League era.

32-year-old Howard made his 208th Premier League appearance against Blackburn at Goodison Park, almost five years after making his move from Manchester United permanent.

'I didn't know that, it's fantastic, Southall set the benchmark here for goalkeepers and for all players because he's got so many records.' Howard told evertonfc.com after the game.

He continued': 'Those are always nice things but something you put on the back-burner. I don't keep up with stats and things like that, I try to keep focused on the now, but it's really nice to hear.

'Old players like me will hang on anything.

'I know what he meant to this club so it's always nice to use him as a marker and try to catch that.'

He of course does have a long way to go before he beats Southall's overall league appearance record for Everton which stands at 578 starts, which doesn't include a further 172 appearances in other competitions!
