Distin turns down Guadeloupe

Sylvain Distin had the chance to represent Guadeloupe in the CONCACAF Gold Cup this summer, but the 33-year-old decided against it so he could concentrate on Everton.

Distin qualifies for the Caribbean island through his father and having never played international football, Guadeloupe approached the French defender to see if he would play in the tournament.

"It was tough, I am 33 now so it made it a difficult choice. My dad is from Guadeloupe and they asked me to play in the Gold Cup.' Distin told evertontv.

But having played a massive part in Everton's season last year, the defender thought it best to rest ahead of next season.

He continued: "I played every game last season and I thought it better to think about the Club rather than going to the Gold Cup.

"It was tempting, It may not be a big nation but it was an interesting offer and it is part of my roots and important to me.

"I was proud that they asked me but I would have been too tired. It was too big a gamble and I decided to be sensible and stay home and get some rest."

Guadeloupe failed to advance past the group stages of the tournament, losing all three matches in a tough group which included Panama, USA and Canada.

This is a good decision for him,so he can concentrate on his club football, at 33 his fitness and longevity for club football should be his major concentration.
