Duffy to take second chance at life

It might sound a bit dramatic to anyone not fully aware of the whole story, but having returned to light training Shane Duffy is ready to take his second chance at life.

Everton's Reserves Player of the Season was training with the Ireland squad back in May when a freak collision left Duffy with a ruptured hepatic artery.

The injury was so severe that the 18-year-old lost two-thirds of his blood supply and if it wasn't for the quick work from team surgeon Professor John O`Byrne, team doctor Alan Byrne and Mater Hospital surgeon Gerry McEntee, we could have experienced a real tragedy.

"I`ve thanked them so many times and I`ll thank them again for being so good at their jobs and saving me. I`m so happy. I appreciate everything they`ve done for me.' Duffy told the Echo.

Duffy was left with a 10 inch scar across his body, but after just eight weeks of recovery, Duffy is back in training.

He added: "It`s made me realise how important it is now to get a second chance at it. I can`t describe it, that I`m still here. I`m just so happy.

"It`s hard to tell people what it feels like because no-one else knows I nearly died. So I just have to live life now, and don`t take anything for granted."

A truly remarkable story.
