Kopites Take Three Points Back To Norway

Everton battled hard against 'that lot' across the park, but eventually fell to a 2-0 defeat, continuing an abysmal record at Goodison against them in recent times. We always seem to scrape a draw at their place, but all too often fail at home.

Everton had much the better of things for over an hour of the contest, it was only when unlikely starter Jo got taken off that Liverpool started to assert themselves and eventually killed the tie off.

Everton made four changes to the side that lost at Hull mid week, Yakubu, Saha, Neill and Rodwell dropping out, replaced by Hibbert, Bilyaletdinov, Fellaini and Jo.

Everton dominated Liverpool in the opening exchanges, and if Bilyaletdinov had managed to connect with a Pienaar cross would have gone ahead within five minutes.

But as good as an Everton midfield which bosses their Liverpool counterparts were, the calamity duo of Distin and Yobo cost Everton again.

Possibly the most dislikeable footballer ever, Mascherano, tried a speculative effort from 25 yards ten minutes in which was going comfortably wide, before Yobo diverted it past the stranded Howard.

Liverpool somehow ahead with their first attack of the game, which wasn't even a decent attack, meant Everton had to respond. And respond they did.

Everton pushed Liverpool back to their own area for the vast majority of the rest of the half, and really should have scored a handful of goals before the break. Bilyaletdinov the most culpable of poor finishing when he somehow fired wide at the back post, any shot on target would have had Reina beaten but it wasn't to be. Not long after Jo was inches away from connecting with a through ball that would also have certainly have resulted in a goal.

Everton did have the ball in the net twice in the first half, but both times strikes by Jo were ruled out for offside.

Firstly a brilliant Everton passing move was prodded home by Jo on the half hour mark, but he had strayed slightly offside. Probably a correct decision, however it would have been allowed at the other end.

The second was a blatant offside, a Yobo head was collected by Jo on the goal line before he prodded it home.

The Everton crowd were roaring their team on, whilst nobody heard anything from the Norwegian contingent infesting the Bullens, but the Blues couldn't fine the break through.

Everton started the second half as they ended the first, around the Liverpool area, but again couldn't find a break through.

But momentum was fading and Moyes decided to bring on King Louis for a tiring Jo, a very good performance by the Brazilian though.

Minutes later Reina somehow denied Everton an equaliser. A Tim Cahill header destined for the bottom corner was clawed away, before the Spaniard also managed to clear Fellaini's follow up.

But Everton tired, and seemed to lose faith they'd find an equaliser and with ten minutes left Kuyt ended the tie. Howard parried a Reira shot into Kuyt's path who did the rest.

Everton pretty much gave up at this point, but can take credit from the fact they battered their neighbours for 60 minutes today, even if the result didn't give them what they deserved. And we aren't far away from being the side we were.

Heitinga, Pienaar and Fellaini bossed a Liverpool midfield better than any Everton side has for a decade.

Should have mentioned that you are only 3 points above relegation and I would have got the Kleenex out.
TeddyLyon
Your a funny ***** you aren't you
EvertonMike
"Possibly the most dislikeable footballer ever, Mascherano" At least he doesn't elbow players left and right like Fellaini, how his elbow against Lucas isn't even a foul is beyond me. He could've been sent off for that, at least he should've got a yellow card.
JohnDoe
"Probably a correct decision, however it would have been allowed at the other end." Bitter as usual I see, not a surprise there.
JohnDoe
I just cannot understand why you lot are known as 'The Bitters'. There's nothing in this article to suggest why?...... In all fairness, we were lucky today cos we were *****e....but you were *****e too. Mascherano the most dislikeable footballer ever?! Erm Tim Cahill?
Superhans
I see no mention of Distin's hand ball in your report. If it was at the other end you'd be screaming for a penalty. Keep that in mind when you moan about the other end getting the decisions.
JohnDoe
In truth I had no idea Distin handballed it, I'm sure from your arm chair you had a great view of it, but at the game I didn't see it, I'm guessing it was at the park end, end of the pitch. Fellaini elbowed Lucas yes, he does it to everyone he seems unable to jump without thrusting his elbows out hence why he gets 15 bookings a season. And Mascherano is a horrible ***** constantly moaning at the ref trying to get people booked.
EvertonMike
N.B forgot to had, superhans, I'm hardly going to consider one of our best players the most dislikeable footballer ever am I? And JonhDoe if you somehow believe Liverpool don't get the best of the refereeing decisions, then you are ridiculously delusional or naive.
EvertonMike
What is worse, elbowing players in the face or trying to get players booked?
JohnDoe
And it was a hand ball Mike, and if it was Carragher who did it you'd be screaming for a penalty. By the way, according to Jeff Winter's league of injustice, Liverpool should be one point better off this season and Everton a point worse off, so who gets the best of the refereeing decisions?
JohnDoe
Not all decisions result in a goal, I'm guessing he does it like that rightresult thing and counts only whether a goal should stand or not. Every 50/50 decision liverpool get, I'd say even every 40/60 decision liverpool get. That doesn't mean you'll directly score from that. If carragher handballed it I probably would be doing yes, but not if we'd won the game.
EvertonMike
Regarding eblowing/influencing the ref, I have no respect at all for anyone who tries to get the opposition booked, and Gerard and mascherano are the two worst for it. Obviously elbowing someone is not fair play, but I have much less respect for player getting others booked than giving someone an elbow.
EvertonMike
Actually Everton should be three points worse off. That's a four point difference between you and us in our favor, and you say we get the best of the refereeing decisions!!!!!
JohnDoe
Elbowing players in the face can result in serious injury. Felliani can consider himself lucky that he hasn't injured a player with his flying elbows. It's only a matter of time before he does it if he continues playing that way, and that is far worse than trying to get players booked.
JohnDoe
As I said, your either delusional or naive, if you believe the only refereeing decisions that matter are those that directly result in goals.
EvertonMike
Those are the most important decisions a ref makes, and Everton are three points better than they should be and Liverpool one point worse because the refs got those decisions wrong. It should be a 12 point difference between our clubs in stead of 8, yet you're the ones moaning about the refereeing, and you say I'm delusional!!!!
JohnDoe
All that thing is based on is if a penalty should/shouldn't have been awarded, or if a goal was/wasn't offside, or a free kick which was scored from was correctly given. It gives no consideration to a free kick not given, whether that would have been scored from. And also completely takes out the basic fact that goals change games. If say Everton are massively on top and after 15 minutes get a goal from a penalty that shouldn't have been given, we are then likely to defend our lead and not push as fully for a goal as we can afford for the opposition to have to break us down, meaning we may not score a goal we would otherwise have. Your taking a VERY simplistic method and taking it as basic fact of a referee's performance over a game. As I said, either delusional or extremely naive.
EvertonMike
Arent you guys "Friends"?
HuddersfieldYiddo
So judging a ref on the major decisions he makes is a very simplistic method and I'm delusional or naive for doing so! Remind me, which set of fans that still complain about the !977 FA semi-final, and still slate the referee of that game? Isn't that a very simplistic method and weren't you delusional or naive for doing so? All the refs decisions matter of course, but those that result in goals, or unfairly removes goals matter the most. And those decisions favored Everton this season much more than Liverpool. That is a fact.
JohnDoe
JohnDoe, you're a complete and utter retard if you believe everything Jeff Winter says! He was widely recognised as one of the worst referees of his time! And for you to base any kind of argument on an unofficial website by a fat, attention seeking former referee, then you need to re-think your sources mate. As for Fellaini's elbow, so Lucas got a little cut but was perfectly well enough to run around the pitch screaming at the ref like a little kid who'd had his toys stolen. Selective memory considering Steven Gerrard jumped in the air and kung-fu stamped on Gary Naysmith a few years back and basically nothing was done by the ref. I'd say that was one all. Fellaini jumped, he didn't aim his elbow directly at Lucas, it happened to hit him as he's about a foot shorter than Fellaini. All I can see, after a victory, is Liverpool fans moaning. Seriously guys, I was expecting to see some gloating. But you know you can't gloat, as you know that we should have won. Plain and simple. If it weren't for Joseph Yobo today, we probably would have smashed you.
Toffee Joe
The yearly debates with JohnDoe are as much a part of the tradition of the Derby as anything else for me now Joe, after getting home write the report once sober enough to do so, and then along comes John and disagrees with parts of it, and I then disagree with his disagreeing, and then he disagrees with that and so on. We haven't ever agreed on anything and I doubt we'll start now! When the referee costs you the game with a major decision of course we'll blame him, it doesn't mean when he gets everything else wrong that that's the only thing that mattered
EvertonMike
Anyone listening to talk sport last night? And they call us bitter lol. It's great that they bemoan their horrific injury list as well, Babel and Torres, how could a team possibly be expected to cope!
EvertonMike
ok what about yesterday with i think it was yobo's rugby tackle on lucas that should have been a penalty???? that was more like 90-10 in your favour.... in all fairness we got away with alot last year but this season everything is going against us. as for Fellaini the bloke is a joke i remember watching a game last (not sure who against) and he elbowed about 6 players and they were clearly not an accident. i would of love to see him up against someone like keane or veira see how he would of coped with them giving it twice as much....
muffdaddy1983
And if Mascherano came up against them two, with his constant moaning and whinging, they end up focking eating him. Stop acting like the sun is shining out of all your players *********s. Like I said before, we're supposedly the bitter ones, yet after winning, all you lot can do is moan about a refereeing decision. Oh, and no Mike, I didn't listen to talksport but I can imagine exactly what was being said. Poor poor Liverpool. If your useless manager hadn't taken exception to one of the best strikers in the premier league and hadn't insisted on spending £17mil on an average right back then maybe you'd have some cover for Torres.
Toffee Joe
I don't know about Everton but Winter's right where Liverpool in concerned. We should've had another penalty against Spurs to tie the game, and the Sunderland goal shouldn't have stood, that's two extra points for us. While Birmingham should've won at Anfield, that's a point less. So we should have one more point, I think it's the same regarding Everton. Doesn't matter what the source is if what he's saying is right.
JohnDoe
Keane one of the best strikers in the league!!!!!!!!!!
JohnDoe
It's not just Torres and Babel Mike, while they came on in the second half, both Benayoun and Riera are also injured, otherwise Aurelio wouldn't have started the game. Aquelani is injured also, while Gerrard and Johnson just coming off injury and not in top shape.
JohnDoe
Aquilani. You would have thought you could spell your £20mil summer signing's name right wouldn't you? He's hardly unheard of! O.k. so apply your "hideous injury list" theory to ours. Pienaar's just come back from an 8 week layoff. Yakubu is coming off an 8 month layoff. Neville, Arteta and Jagielka are nowhere near a return. Saha was carrying a knock. Rodwell was injured. Aquilani is not injured. He's just not "match-fit" but who's fault is that? Rafa's. Why? Because he could have played him against Debrecen to gain some valuable playing time. I've already heard your lot moaning midweek about him not playing. Fans and former players. Oh, and Keane has seemed to do well wherever else he's played. However he obviously couldn't quite click with Rafa's policy of once he scored, next week he was on the bench. Good management.
Toffee Joe
yeah, Keane did well at Inter, did he? Keane was given countless opportunities to prove his worth, started 20 games, he didn't. I lost count of how many times Keane was one on one with the opposing keeper and missed the target. Six chances against Preston in the FA cup springs to mind. The run we had after we sold him proves that Rafa was right. Keane just didn't fit with our style of play. As with Aquilani, I think he's still not totally fit, otherwise Rafa would've started him by now, either with the first team or the reserves.
