Anger as Everton target Naughton discusses options

The youngster is locked in what could become a three-way tussle between Everton, Tottenham and Aston Villa.

As expected, Everton's bid on Friday has been matched and according to some, bettered by Tottenham over the weekend, leading to some media outlets suggesting Sheffield United have blocked the player's Goodison Park medical which was scheduled for today.

David Moyes remains confident that he will get his man however, despite this late interest, and hopes his reputation in allowing young players to develop in the Everton first team will win Naughton over.

Everton are also said to be highly disappointed with Sheffield United's decision to potentially derail by refusing to release the player for talks and a medical.

Naughton's advisors are said to be considering the options available before pressing ahead with a move from Brammall Lane.

I knew this would happen. I just hope his advisors make the best decision for him. Dominic King reckons Everton are his preferred choice, I just don't think Spurs can offer him what we can, apart from what will probably be a better contract offer. They are flush with options down their right hand side, in midfield and defence, so he can expect to play second fiddle to the likes of Hutton, Corluka, Lennon and possibly even Bentley. I'd be very disappointed if he chose them over us.
toffeetower
This was what Sheffield wanted, that much was clear when they made a big deal in the press out of rejecting our original bid, and a big deal in the press when they 'accepted' our new offer. I'm sure they were ecstatic it was 3 days before he could hold talks with us so they could happily wait for Spurs to come in and offer to loan him back to them. I'm pretty sure naughton wouldn't want to go back there for a year, and wants to test himself at PL level so hopefully he'll make the right choice. as even if he isn't first choice for Arsenal on the first day, he easily would be by Christmas time IMO, in a top 5 side in the best league in the world. Moyes must clearly want him badly or he would have told Sheffield to stick it with the way they apparently handle negotiations, thank God Jags had a release clause when we got him so we didn't have to deal with this kind of negotiating tactics back then. typical Redknapp as well this, does he even have his own scouts? Or has he just tapped Moyes's phone line...
EvertonMike
so you lot think no-one else is allowed to be interested him, just because you bid first???? GROW UP! its an open market.....
welshyido
Villa fan in peace here. I agree completely, despite the fact I'd love us to sign Naughton; If they've accepted a bid then they need to be men and let the lad go where he wants not to who's offering more. However, with Hairy Redknob on the prowl this window, I have afeeling he's going to be muddying the waters of virtually every transfer involving a top 10 side. The plonker.
Platypus
It is an open market, and you are allowed to bid, but the way in which it's been handled is just wrong. You agree a fee with a club, then agree to release the player, then completely go back on your decision and decide not to grant permission because somebody else has bid. Surely you'd allow both clubs to continue with negotiations, but Everton have apparently been locked out. You try to conduct yourself right in the transfer market, talk to the club, respect their wishes, match their asking price, remain committed to signing the player and that's how you get treated. There will be no such thing as gentlemanly conduct in the game at this rate.
toffeetower
platypus what a mug u sound! how many signings have redknapp and spurs made this window???? "muddying the waters"?? go back to bed you w-a-n-k-e-r.
lillywhites101
Toffeetower - I wouldn't be disappointed if he chooses us over you. Football is all about money now days and most players will move if someone offers them a cheese sandwich more at lunchtime. Besides, it wouldn't surprise me if we sign Naughton and then you get Hutton from us. Apparently Redknapp doesn't rate him and if he moves up to you he's halfway home. Plus Moyes is a Sweaty too and he rates him. So this might not work out too badly for you guys. We have about 5 right backs already ( we also have Chris Gunter and Chimbonda ), so I can't really see why Naughton would want to sign for us unless it was money. Where else are you hoping Moyes strengthens ? I've got a mate who's a Toffee and he reckons that you need a right back and some pace in midfield. Are you happy with Jo ?
jolmember
the lad would do well at both villa and everton. if he ends up at spurs he will have been badly advised or has an agent that does'nt give a *****.
zepplin
I would happily let Villa and Everton have their own tussle over this one. As has been pointed out we are flush with options at right back, and I really can't see Naughton staking a first team place ahead of our current choices. And Platypus (very cool name by the way, you must be a killer with the ladies!), exaclty what transfers has 'Arry 'muddied the waters' with?!
LilyWhiteHart
If someone offered more money then they would be fools to not say wait a minute thats an extra million quid or whatever it is. Its their player and i probably didnt wanna sell him in the first place so yeah they have every right to get as much as they can for him.
asherthesmasher
toffeetower- fair point fella, but you should be annoyed at sheff utd not spurs or Arry. we have matched your bid we aint guzumped you, its just we've offered to pay more upfront theres nowt wrong wiv that tho mate.
welshyido
Typical Spurs, just trying to buy all the players so noone else can have them. They'll be trying to sell him next year for double what they paid and 'Arry will have made him into a worse player by demoralising him. Sheffield are out of order if they have locked Everton out and they should both be allowed to offer the player terms. Everton are in Europe and Moyes is well respected (unlike Redknapp) so probably best off without the player if he decides to go to WHL as he's just a money grabber!!
Villan444
Depends. If the club accepted all the bids and then left it to the player, then it's all normal football form as far as I'm concerned!
Matt_Us
We all know what Redknapp is like in the transfer window. He might as well change his name to 'Ulterior Motives' by deed-poll. I said I have a feeling he'd be up to his old tricks again this window nothing else, so asking me for examples is just mis-reading what I wrote on purpose isn't it? Also, nice to see it doesn't take much for people to resort to personal insults but that's the difference of Villa and Everton against the likes of Spurs - a little bit of class.
Platypus
You can be angry with whoever you like on this deal but the truth of the matter is this, the selling club (Sheffield Utd in this case) should in the interests of their own club accept the highest offer and nothing less, they should ask Everton to match it IF it has been betten, this is not wrong by Sheffields management or Spurs to offer it is simple business sense and unfortunately as we all know these days football is a business as much as banking is, only some would say the bankers don't rip us off so much!
stu_u2k
Platypus backup your arguments with examples please or as my teachers used to tell me SHOW YOUR WORKINGS! :P
stu_u2k
No need for the childish rebuttal lillywhites101. Platypus is spot on about Redknapp, and your deluding yourself if you think otherwise. Redknapp's always been a little underhand when it comes to transfers, I shouldn't worry if I were you as you as it will only serve you well as a Spurs fan. For the rest of us though he's a pain in @rse.
astonguerrilla
platypus this clearly has nothing to do with naughton, but plenty to do with you obvious issue with spurs....why dont you go and worry about how your going to deal without laursen and barry next season, the foundations of your team.
lillywhites101
Stu, everyone knows what 'Arry is like. He told everyone that he wanted Barry while he was in the process of signing for Man Citeh to name but one. http://community.codemasters.com/forum/showthread.php?p=4858327 Thats aptly named "The Harry Redknapp guide to interviews and says it all!!!
Villan444
Platypus, you obviously don't go onto your own Vital site that often if you believe your fans are classier than Spurs in respect to personal insults...
Othello
whoever said spurs fans lack class have got it spot on. They and Redknapp are made for each other
rotter82
Can't understand Spurs bidding for Naughton..we're fully covered at RB and won't even be playing a reserves side next season. I appreciate Spurs may not be popular bidding on a player when he's almost done a deal elsewhere but that is football...as for Sheffield locking Everton out of further negotiations...that's just bad manners.
MKYid
Sheffield Utd have already accepted Everton's bid! If not releasing him for a medical isn't pretty poor behaviour then I don't know what is. TBH Redknapp has been surprisingly quiet this summer so far but I don't expect it to last. Remember his musings on Kenwyne Jones? A good 5 minute chat about how he'd love to have him up front for Spurs all neatly finished with his favourite "but I don't talk about other clubs players". Classic!
Platypus
Aston, I am not saying you are wrong, I have been a Spurs fan for all my life and even when he was at West Spam I questioned Harry's methods once or twice but and it is a big BUT, there is no proof of anything underhanded, then with a leak here or there, or just general rumors, every signing is 'unsettled' before the deal is done, football is dodgy these days, for example.....
stu_u2k
Real Madrid clearly unsettled Ronaldo last year just like Man U clearly unsettled Berbatov the year before, FIFA were aware of both but did nothing as it is either too hard to prove or they just dont care because the whole system is *****e anyway! Personally I think the latter otherwise 'Agents' or 'Scum' would have been kicked out of the game already. It's not a house Harry or O'Neil do not need an agent to find their Naughtons there is soo many other ways!
stu_u2k
With regards to being too hard to prove Stu, did Redknapp ever get charged for his corruptness?? Don't think that the police were ever charged for raiding his place that he vehemently demanded he was going to do!! There's no smoke without fire!!!
Villan444
Villan444, What is wrong with him saying that? If Real can say it about Ronaldo, Man U can say it about Berba & FIFA say nothing surely this is allowed, what I think the real issue is that the rules say one thing and the governing bodies say another, in which case FIFA, UEFA & The F.A. of each country is to blame. Comments please?
stu_u2k
Vilan: There is no smoke without fire is bollox & is a complete contradiction to the laws of the counrty you live in. I.E. Innocent until PROVEN guilty, THERE WAS NO PROOF! I wasn't there so I cannot confirm if he is guilty or not but you are judging someone who has not been proved guilty of a crime, in that case, the Royals killed Diana, OJ did it by default, Jacko is a peado & the guy who got let off did actually kill Jill Dando, only we know for sure the later didn't!
stu_u2k
Oh and Vilan one more point. No he did not get charged, is got arrested and released otherwise he would have been on bail for the last few years!
stu_u2k
i really dont understand what the fuss is all about..The guy is still a sheffield player. He has not yet signed a deal with Everton. Spurs are allowed to ask for his availabilty. Its not exactly rocket science or are some you new to the game!
freddya
you can put whatever spin you want on this, bottom line redknapp is a w$n3er
eltoro
There is no fuss, just people trying to have an unfounded go at Spurs or Harry, people who strangely stopped responding when they were corrected & proved wrong.
stu_u2k
No fuss at all. It seems that people hate it when Spurs make a legitimate move for a player. Any other club wouldn't get the same level of vitriol.
Othello
Stu, I agree about innocent until proven guilty but it's not black and white. Yes Jacko was found not guilty but you wouldn't have let him babysit for you would you? Harry has not been proven to be guilty but I certainly wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him. Ricky Sbragia pulled Redknapp up on him talking about Kenwyne Jones and Redknapp pulled out some childish pathetic retort like "well, um, one of my players told me, um, that Sunderland tried to unsettle him too". Harry has previous.
Platypus
Bit gutted we didn't go in for him in the first place but agree with everything said above, typical Redknapp, the bloke's a crook.....
pjvilla
If the deal with Naughton means that both Tottenham and Everton are allowed to talk to the player over terms eventually leading to a medical then that's fine, I have no problem with that sort of competition. It's not Spurs' fault, I just find it very unfair how Sheffield United could all of a sudden lock Everton out of the running because somebody came in with a sudden 'bigger' offer. It was our interest that was lodged first, we put the first bid in, now it is being written that our bid has been rejected after it was originally accepted. That's not on! And that's what annoys me. Jolmember, yes we are happy with Jo, he'll get better and add to our options upfront. Your Toffee friend is right, we lack pace in the midfield, Naughton offers options at both RB and RM which is why such a fuss is being made. We sorely lacked pace and invention on the right last season and Naughton would serve himself well to get down to Goodison. If he is as good as some of the Blades fans on here make him out to be he'll be adored.
toffeetower
may the best team win on this one boys. at this stage it is surely down to the player and his choice for his future. he is a player whi has really impressed me when I have seen him and I would hope he makes the decision which is best for his career in the long term, not a decision based on money.
oxfordspur
all this sheff utd unfair comment is a joke. naughton has been a blade all his life and been on the books since he was 8 years old. he has been natured by the club for many many many years then clubs like yourself come along and expect to get our quality players for peanuts. we dont want to sell him at all and he's worth much more than the 5m branded around. you can't blame us into putting our feet down and trying to sell the best young player that sheff utd have had in the last 70 years!! premiership clubs think they can danggle the carrot infront of young players eyes, promise them the world and to get them cheap by bullying the selling clubs. moyes would be prepared to break the back for naughton but he came in with a shocking 3.5m bid!! thats whats done this that bid was insulting...course we are going to doccument this fact you cant blame us for that - and especially after the tevez affair and how were were treat surely you can't blame us for anything. still think he will go to everton but i think the fee could be closer to the 7-8 mark!! which in my eyes is still a great deal for a very good young nailed on england regular!!
bladesforlife1889
Platypus, as I said before in a world where Real Madrid have unsettled Ronaldo and Man Utd have unsettled Berbatov and FIFA & Co say nothing I think we all have to accept that this is the way it is, like it or not and I for one don't.
stu_u2k
If sheffield United were so insulted by our original bid (that could have risen to over £5 million for a player who has never played at any kind of decent level, oh the horror that must have caused your board, I bet they cried themselves to sleep for days....) why accept the second bid at all?
EvertonMike
I understand that Everton have signed a lad called Defour? I hope you get McNaughton, and I think a deal will be sorted out, if you sell Lescott to City.
Buzz Lightyear
evertonmike the bid was a firm 3.5m with micky mouse payments thereafter which would have never developed. 3.5m was insulting and moyes knows that. we believe the price to be in the region of 6m. as for not playing at a decent level he has played in the championship more or less all season and shown players up all season long. he has constantly performed and been the first name on the team sheet. if this lad was at man u and performed like this for half a season clubs would be bidding 20m plus for him. im telling you to stump the money up now becuase it a season or 2 you will have a regular england player still very very young and woth 30m. this lad is destined for bigger clubs than everton and i feel he may use you lot as a stepping stone to the big four and to the land of the giants in spain!!
bladesforlife1889
If he was playing for United week in week out at his age yes he would be worth £20 million, as he'd have been winning the Premier League and playing top level Champions League football. But he wasn't was he, he was playing Blackpool and Barnsley.
EvertonMike
Hatchet Harry?

Thanks for getting back to me Toffeetower. What happened to Hibbert ? He looked a really good player to me a few years ago, but he seems to have lost his way ? I think the spine of your team is pretty solid - Howard/Jags/Lescott/Fellani/Arteta/Cahill/Yak. From an outsider's point of view it is the flanks that need improving. Whilst I appreciate the frustration over Sheff utd's apparent reneging of the acceptance of the Everton bid, until the deal is done, it is their right to sell to whom they see fit. Whilst I understand the perception that Harry is a bit of a dodgy wheeler dealer, I can't understand why all the Villa fans are on here having a pop ? ToffeeTower - one final question - do you agree with loans between Premiership clubs ? Personally I disagree with it in principle - I guess I'm old fashioned and remember when loans were only for a team that had an injury crisis in a specific position. However, that said - well done to Moyes to effectively getting a great player for nothing !
jolmember
Agree Stu that Benitez is also a b'5tard for his dealings in the transfer market and Ronaldo always wanted to play for REAL, as Fergie says they were lucky to have had him for so long. BUT this still doesn't mean that Redknapp is angelic in his dealings. The guy is a prize Nob. I understand that you have got to support your manager but when he stitches you up and leaves you in a mess, I'm sure that you won't be singing his praises.
Villan444
We are blessed to have a manager that has a lot of integrity and is respected by most. I know people who have met him at different clubs that he has managed and they all speak very highly of him. 'Arry is a dodgy car salesman and thinks that he can sweet talk his way out of any mess with his wink and cockney accent. He has sold out Southampton and Pompey twice, second time after they had given him the key to the city!!!! I know who I'd rather have in charge
Villan444
Wow, this certainly caused a lot of debate!! Back to the original point though. I'm pretty certain that you can't refuse to release a player for talks/medical after a bid has been officially accepted. I'm pretty sure there would be laws against this. Yes, they can accept another offer, but once terms with the selling club have been agreed, the matter is in the player's hands. I'm fairly confident he would prefer to join us over Spurs if he is given the option as he's more likely to be a first team regular and he would still be relatively close to his family and hometown.
Toffee Joe
